The anti clerical laws in France at the end of 19th century and the beginning of the 20th led our congregation to extend its mission to many countries in Europe, Africa and Asia. Thus in 1903, Bros. Denis, John the Baptist and Martin landed in Pondicherry. In 1905, Bro. Denis, the Superior, started a Novitiate at Tindivanam. On Feb.3, 1910, the first Indian Brother, Bro Louis made his religious vows.
After closing down the Novitiate of Tindivanam and after sending their candidate to Belgium and later to Singapore, in 1942, the Brothers started a Novitiate in Coonoor, which was transferred to Yercaud in 1952.
In 1955, a number of Schools were started in Andhra Pradesh and the Brothers extended their mission to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. In 1968, we started a Novitiate in Hazaribagh.
The extension of our mission to other states and areas went on. In 1973, we started a mission in Fiji Islands and in 1975 we took charge of two schools in Mizoram. In 1983, we started a mission in Tanzania. Lately we have gone to Tonga, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and Madagascar. Our Brothers have been sent to Thailand and Mauritius.
We have also started a degree collages in different state. The college for the hearing impaired in Adyar, Chennai deserve a special mention. Also a training centre and a B.Ed. study centre in Tura to train teachers for the hearing impaired and the visually handicapped. Further we have started Master’s Degree course in Counseling in Bangalore.
Since 1998, our Indian mission has eight Provinces of Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune, Ranchi, North East India, Trichy and Yercaud along with the District of South Pacific and East Africa. Thanks to God’s abundant blessings, today we are about 600 Brothers working in nearly 200 institutions of different types spread across 22 states in India, actively participating in diverse fields of apostolate that include formal and non-formal technical and academic education; education, care and rehabilitation of the physically and mentally challenged persons; the street children and the orphans; the care of elderly people; empowerment of women and the marginalized, adoption and up-liftment programmes aimed at the downtrodden in rural and urban areas.
